How Substance Use Counseling Works
Substance Use Counseling consists of 60-minute, one-on-one sessions that help you work through your concerns. In addition to listening, I will guide you towards solutions and share what the science tells us about what's going on for you, I play an active role.
Here’s how it will work step-by-step
1
First, I provide a safe, accepting space so that you will feel comfortable sharing your experiences and struggles with me.
2
Through hearing your story, I will start to get a picture of what your challenges are.
3
We will start with helping you with immediate concerns like managing difficult emotions and challenging life situations.
4
We will also work to discover what your goals are in therapy and in life.
5
Keeping your unique goals in mind, we’ll figure out what’s needed to help you reach them.
6
Over the course of our sessions, you will start making progress in discovering the life you desire and defining what your ideal relationship with substance use looks like.
Research shows that Substance Use Counseling can positively change your thinking, beliefs, emotions, and behaviors. It can help you let go of what’s holding you back.
Common Questions
Is abstinence required for engagement in treatment?
Everyone starts therapy at different points in their relationship with substance use and abstinence is not a requirement for treatment. Throughout the assessment process, we can explore and identify your unique goals related to substance use which may include abstinence or moderation.
Will I be terminated if I relapse?
Relapse happens and every person goes through a unique process of defining their relationship with substances. Therefore, continued substance use or relapse would not be grounds for termination from treatment. We would however want to establish ground rules pertaining to that substance use including no substance use at the time of therapy and the importance of disclosure should a relapse occur.
How can therapy help my substance use?
Recovering from substance use or developing a healthy relationship with substances takes more than just stopping use. Therapy can help to identify the underlying factors and motivators that feed into cycles of substance use and develop new strategies for taking on life.
Will I need to be in therapy for forever?
Timelines for therapy can vary dramatically from person to person with some individuals engaging in therapy for less than 6 months while others continue attendance for years. There is no “one size fits all” when it comes to developing the ideal timeline of engagement with supports. I can say that the primary goal of therapy is to no longer need therapy so we will begin planning from the initiation of treatment for what that would look like for you.
